Chanukkah. Hanukkah. Chanuka...

What is it?
165 BCE: The ruling Greeks tried to erase Jewish life, but a
small group of Jews let ‘em have it. They saved their culture
and rededicated the Temple with a day’s worth of oil that
lasted eight whole days. Hello miracle.

Why should I care?
No matter how you spell it, this Jewish festival is all about
sticking to your guns and preserving something great for
future generations.

How can I keep it real?
Two words: lights and oil.
Light up the night with a menorah. It can be something
quaint and residential or a massive public affair. Whatever
you do, just let it shine, shine, shine! Once that’s done, it’s
time to chow down on treats from The Big Book of Jewish
Guilty Pleasures; latkes, doughnuts and so much more.
Lights! Oil! Action!

Purim

What is it?
The year was the fourth century BCE.
The place, Persia. The king’s prime minister
cooks up a plot to wipe the Jews off the
face of the earth. The plot is foiled by
crafty Esther and Mordechai. Yay!

Why should I care?
We live in a time and place of great
comfort. Sometimes it’s easy to forget the
threats of the past. Purim takes us for a
journey through a period of challenge
and victory.
How can I keep it real?
If ever there were a holiday made for
partying, this is it. Listen to the megillah,
then eat, drink and be merry Hebrew
style! Want to make a costume stand
out? Try wearing it when 98% of the local
population isn’t. This is a great time to let
down your guard and be someone/thing
else for a day.
